Event Recap Canberra and Melbourne

Loss of a parent due to domestic homicide and including children meaningfully in decisions that affect them.

Hannah Morrice Research Fellow Elicia Savvas Associate Director, Child Protection at Victoria Legal Aid
Canberra and Melbourne family law professionals were lucky to hear these two passionate researchers.

Hannah spoke thoughtfully of the Melbourne University research around children’s experiences and outcomes after the loss of a parent due to homicide, particularly emphasising the themes of a dramatic change in living circumstances, adult-centric thinking and decision-making for them (often well-meaning), a sense of secrecy around the homicide, poor information sharing, a lack of autonomy and the subsequent effects on identity and long term mental health.

With some exciting developments emerging from the project!
